What inspires you to work in the life science industry?

The 11th of February we celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science. We asked a number of our members, made up of female leaders and entrepreneurs in the industry, ‘What inspired you to work in the life sciences industry? See their answer below.

“I have a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences and developing and getting medicines to the market has been the purpose of my entire career.”

Ulla Grove Krogsgaard Thomsen, CEO Novo Nordisk Pharmatech

As an MD, I perform research to be able to ask and answer important questions related to human health, e.g., how does exercise during pregnancy affect health of the offspring? Looking at my career, I can see that I have more often posed questions related to women’s health compared to my male colleagues. This is one of the reasons why gender diversity in life science matters.

Bente Merete Stallknecht, Dean at the Health Faculty University of Copenhagen

“I decided to leave the clinic and work in the life science industry, because I was interested in always following the newest cutting-edge medical science, and at the same I wanted to work with something that seems meaningful to me, and where I believe I can make a difference to patients.”

Anne Bloch Thomsen, Medical Director, Denmark & Iceland, Board member for EMPROS Pharma Sweden and Pfizer Denmark, Cofounder of a start-up for women's health (Freya Biosciences)

How can one avoid feeling inspired and fascinated? I like to work in this broad complexity and my background is useful and adds other perspectives.

Marianne Søgaard, Chairperson Evaxion Biotech

To work with something that has a very clear and meaningful purpose, and at the same time rooted in science, is a fantastic driver and inspiration when working in the life science industry.

Jette Wagtberg Sen, COO Synklino

Life sciences is the place where I am continuously fascinated by how we find new and better ways of treating maladies, and where my curious mind finds ease. I feel I can utilize my strengths and work with my passion – which is extremely motivating and developing.

Tanja Villumsen, Chairperson The Pharma Denmark Union

Developing new treatments for diseases for patients and “cutting edge” technologies that brings value to society, has been the main driver to work in the life science space.

Hervør Lykke Olsen, Principal, Business Development at BioInnovation Institute

I have always been inspired by the industry – probably because my mum suffered from multiple sclerosis. I have focused on the industry since the late nineties as an investment banker.

Helle Busck-Fensvig, Business Angel and WiLD Board member

I was deeply inspired to work in the Life Science industry because I wanted to participate in improving the quality of life for patients suffering from diseases and to identify new drug products that could end up saving lives.

Louise Lyhne, CEO Lyhne Life

I would say it was curiosity – and a longing for answers. After finishing my Ph.D. in neuroscience, I went to work in the pharmaceutical industry to use my skills to help discover new drugs for the benefit of patients.

Lone Veng, Board member Mercy Ships

The urge to do good – to be a part of developing new medicine that can save lives is a great drive for me. I have always been fascinated by science, especially the biology and function of the human body and brain.

Lene Gerlach, Ph.D., Partner Eir Ventures, Chairperson of WiLD
